Krakatau

Read more about Krakatau here

Krakatau is a volcano complex located in the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra. The ancient Mount Krakatau had 3 vents (cones) until its devastating catastrophic blast in 1883 which literally self-destructed almost the entire volcano. What's left today is the colossal Rakata Island.

1928

The Birth: In 1928, from one of its vent, Mount Anak Krakatau emerged from below the sea and eventually formed an island and a volcano. Anak means child in Bahasa Indonesia, and in fact it is a "baby" volcano compared to other bigger and higher volcanoes in Indonesia. But, unlike other volcanoes, it is steadily growing. Therefore some call it "the beast" or "the volcano of the volcanoes".

Periodic eruptions have continued since its birth, with recent eruptions in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. As of late 2011, this island has ga radius of roughly 2 kilometres (1.2 mi), and a high point of about 324 metres (1,063 ft) above sea level, growing 5 metres (16 ft) each year.

Mount Anak Krakatau is literally guarded from 3 directions, surrounded by Rakata Island, Panjang Island, and Sertung Island.

Notes: by coincidence, October 28, 1928 is marked as the National Awakening Day, where the young nationalists from all over Indonesia gathered at a youth congress and pledged :

  • acknowledge one motherland, Indonesia
  • acknowledge one nation, the nation of Indonesia
  • respect the language of unity, Bahasa Indonesia

Experience

  • Visiting Krakatau is one of a kind experience. You'll gradually feel the excitement when approaching the area, greeted by prehistoric colossal Rakata Island to the left and Panjang Island to the right. It's like floating on a tiny boat between two giants protecting the child in the middle, Mount Anak Krakatau.
  • After landing on Anak Krakatau's dark volcanic sandy beach we'll follow a short trail through a small green lush forest leading to the lower slope of the volcano. Sometimes monitor lizards could be seen in the bush, but mostly they hang around the forests near the beach. Monitor lizards, snakes, can also be found on Rakata.
  • Climbing Anak Krakatau is not difficult and the "level one", the first outer rim (the old crater rim) is the safe and recommended zone for ordinary visitors. Actually, it could be reached in less than 30 minutes for fit hikers. But no need to hurry, as you walk, look around and see big hardened rocks and realize the magnitude of power to lift and spew these rocks from the crater. As you climb higher, look back and see the fantastic view below, sparkling sea water, beautiful breathtaking view towards Rakata Island and Panjang Island.
  • Lunch will be served at the rest area near the beach. After lunch, you will be taken by boat to circumnavigate the Anak Krakatau and see the other sides of the volcano. This shows how the earth is made.
  • The boat will cruise toward Legon Cabe by Rakata and halt by shallow colourful coral reef, home to plenty of beautiful fish: angelfish, surgeonfish, clownfish, batfish, butterfly fish, and more. Time to jump into the water for swimming and snorkeling.
